Why spend two Superior Lair Keys on a boss when one key can feed your Mythic chase? That question defines Diablo 4 Season 14's endgame, and it matters far more than chasing every shiny drop. Before you commit to a route, check the build slot you still need, keep your Diablo 4 runes and gear setup organized, and decide if today's session is about one Unique or long-term crafting progress.
Bosses Have Jobs, Not Just Loot Pools
The best boss depends on what is missing from your loadout. Initiate bosses such as Varshan, Grigoire, Lord Zir, Beast in the Ice, and Urivar are precision farms: you run them because their narrower pools can finish a build-defining slot. Greater bosses still matter for their own focused drops, while Belial lets you select another boss pool after the kill. Corrupted Reaper sits apart because its Hoard rewards support both direct Mythic luck and Pandemonium Fragment farming.
Target | Key Cost | Best Use | Initiate Bosses | Lair Key | Specific Unique hunting | Greater Bosses | Greater Lair Key | Focused class and all-class drops | Belial | Two Superior Lair Keys | Chosen boss pool access | Corrupted Reaper | One Superior Lair Key | Fragments and broad Mythic progress | The Stop Rule Most Players Ignore
Here's what I wish more players did: stop farming a focused boss after the item that unlocks the build drops. It is easy to keep running Duriel, Andariel, or another familiar encounter because the fight is fast and the loot feels familiar. But once your required Unique is secured, you are often spending valuable keys for duplicate RNG instead of moving toward a stronger overall account. From what I've seen, the cleanest farming sessions begin with a written target and end the moment that target is met.
Fragments Are Your Safety Net Against Bad RNG
Pandemonium Fragments change the emotional math of Diablo 4 boss farming. Corrupted Reaper can award up to two Fragments based on Torment level, and repeatable Glints of Hope reputation rewards guarantee another source of progress. Four Fragments fuel the Horadric Cube craft, which produces a Mythic Unique in the same equipment slot as the Unique you sacrifice. That does not promise the exact item you want, but it gives you control over the slot pool-far better than blindly hoping a random drop fixes your build. A little cheap Diablo IV Gold can also help cover the town-side costs of sorting, upgrading, and testing those new drops between boss batches.
A Better Session Plan
Don't bounce between every activity after each kill. Diablo 4 rewards batching because travel, inventory cleanup, and repeated menu time quietly eat more minutes than most players admit. Run the loop in stages, then spend keys in a concentrated burst while your build and pacing are dialed in.
1. Claim available Season Reputation and Glints of Hope rewards before starting the grind.
2. Complete the activities that lead into Deathtoll Chambers and build a stack of Superior Lair Keys.
3. Spend ordinary and Greater Lair Keys only on bosses holding an item your current build actually needs.
4. Use your Superior Lair Key stock on Corrupted Reaper unless Belial can solve a specific loot-pool problem.
Pick Torment by Hoards Per Hour
The highest Torment setting is not automatically the efficient one. A higher tier can improve Reaper Fragment value, but a slow boss kill, repeated deaths, or a messy Chamber run can erase that gain fast. Test your route for a full batch rather than judging one lucky clear. You want a difficulty where your DPS remains steady, defensive procs are not constantly saving you, and inventory visits do not break the rhythm. Fast, repeatable clears beat heroic slogs.
Precision First, Volume Second
Season 14 is healthiest when you treat its bosses as a rotating tool kit. Use focused encounters to complete the build, use Belial only when selected targeting justifies his higher key price, and shift to Corrupted Reaper once you want Mythic volume plus crafting currency. The headline lesson is simple: don't measure every boss by the same reward. Match the encounter to the problem in front of your Diablo 4 character, and your keys will feel much less disposable.
