Why did winning a defensive fight ever risk changing the kind of Arc Raiders lobbies you saw next? That question sits at the center of Update 1.39.0, and it matters more than another loot tweak or weapon adjustment because every run begins with the expectations you bring Topside-your loadout, your route, and the ARC Raiders Items you're willing to risk all depend on what sort of encounter you expect.

The Update Is About Intent, Not Just Kills

Arc Raiders is still active, and the July 28, 2026 update is a serious attempt to correct a matchmaking problem that players could feel even if they never saw the underlying numbers. Under the current test, a squad that gets damaged, downed, or knocked out first is considered defensive for that encounter. Fighting back-even finishing the attackers-should not raise that squad's combat-focused playstyle estimate. The system also weighs the scale of a fight, so a long exchange with heavy damage and repeated downs means more than one stray shot. Joining a battle already underway counts as choosing conflict, which is a fair distinction even if messy first contact will always create edge cases.

Okay, Let's Talk About What You Should Do

The practical takeaway is not "never shoot first." Arc Raiders still needs tension, and a quiet approach can turn ugly in seconds. But players who want more varied raids should make their intent readable before committing. At least in my experience, the biggest mistake is treating every unknown silhouette as free DPS; that approach creates fast wins, but it also removes the social mind game that makes a successful extract memorable. Use this quick pre-fight check.

1. Listen for nearby ARC pressure before starting a squad fight, because a machine third party can ruin a clean opening.
2. Mark exits and cover first, especially when your backpack already holds project materials or high-value loot.
3. Fire only after deciding whether the reward is worth spending ammo, healing, and time near an exposed position.

Matchmaking Needs Context Across Squad Sizes

Separate Solo, Duo, and Trio tracking, introduced in 1.36.0, is the other half of this change. A solo player avoiding a firefight is making a different calculation from a trio with overlapping angles and revives available. Folding those behaviors into one profile would flatten the game's most interesting choices. From what I've seen, this is where Arc Raiders has the right idea: it isn't trying to remove aggressive players from the experience; it's trying to keep defensive players from being pushed toward constant initiators merely because they refused to fold. That leaves room for a cautious run, a social standoff, or a full-send fight.

The Small Fixes Decide Whether a Run Feels Fair

The Seeker Grenade and Wolfpack Grenade damage corrections may sound less exciting than matchmaking, yet predictable explosives are a bigger deal during clutch moments than flashy patch notes suggest. The update also adjusts Converging Paths trinket stacking and distribution, while Project screens now offer clearer steps, rewards, and completed-stage review. For players planning long-term goals or comparing ARC Items for sale with what they can earn in raids, that clearer progression loop makes it easier to judge what actually deserves backpack space.

Technical Friction Is Still the Real Threat

Update 1.39.0 also repairs map collision, floating objects, terrain gaps, stuck spots, an out-of-bounds Snap Hook route, the End of Round tunnel issue, and a startup crash after the photosensitivity screen. That's meaningful work, but the remaining problem list is still long: console crashes, Quick Wheel mis-selections, training-target damage failures, throwable animation trouble, odd movement during interrupted searches, and shots from ARC rides failing to register. None of those problems are exciting to discuss. They are exactly what can turn a well-played extraction into a miserable loss.

What Happened to Arc Raiders?

It reached the hard part: proving that its systems can support different player personalities without making every raid feel identical. Update 1.39.0 doesn't magically solve unreliable moments or perfectly decode who started every fight. But its defensive PvP test shows Arc Raiders understands the difference between hunting players and surviving them. Keep your routes flexible, don't overcommit to every gunshot, and watch how your Solo, Duo, and Trio raids feel over several sessions rather than judging the change from one brutal lobby.
